County will take up proposal to stop all wind developments

BAD AXE – Huron County officials are considering a five-year moratorium on wind development.

An agenda item for Tuesday’s Huron County Board of Commissioner’s meeting states, “Refer the proposed amendment to the Zoning Ordinance, which would impose a moratorium of the issuance of permits, licenses, or approvals for wind energy systems to the planning commission for consideration and comment.”

Commissioner Ron Wruble and county Corporate Counsel Steve Allen composed the resolution, said Commissioner John Nugent.

Wruble could not be reached for comment.

Nugent said he agrees with the proposal.

“I’m inclined to support anything Ron proposes at this stage,” Nugent said, because Wruble is “going through hell” in his district with wind development issues.

Nugent says he can relate.

Part of his constituency is in Lincoln Township and has wanted to be pulled from a wind overlay district proposed by DTE Energy.

“There’s a few people that want them, I can grant that, yes. The majority don’t want to be included,” Nugent said.

The board recently split on a 4-3 vote to approve DTE’s overlay district.
