Wind turbine burns near O’Donnell

The generating unit on top of a 350-foot tall wind turbine, as well as the blades, were damaged by an early morning fire on Monday in southeast Lynn County near O’Donnell.
Members of the O’Donnell Volunteer Fire Department were called out at 5:40 a.m. Monday for the fire, Mark Roye, public information officer said, but there was not really anything they could do after they arrived at the scene and found the wind turbine fully involved in fire.
Shortly after the firefighters arrived, Roye said, one of the burning blades broke loose and fell to the ground, causing a pendulum motion where the wind turbine began to sway back and forth. A second burning blade then broke loose and fell to the ground.
Only one of the over 130-feet long blades remained attached to the wind turbine, but it was damaged and hanging down parallel to the tower.
“We deemed the area around the wind turbine as unsafe and did not enter it,” Roye said.
