Destroying our mountains

Construction is now under way on an $80 million wind-power project in the southern Vermont towns of Searsburg and Readsboro. The 15-turbine project is being developed on public land. The dynamite and bulldozers of industrial wind are now on our Green Mountain National Forest. It is the first large-scale commercial wind project in the country on U.S. Forest Service land.
Granted, national forest is billed as the land of many uses, but destroying our mountains is not one of them. Allowing industrial wind on the Green Mountain National Forest sets a dangerous precedent for additional areas of the Green Mountain and other national forests. What’s next, the big wild woods of Glastonbury and Woodford, Vermont? Public land is sacred and must be used with the greatest of respect, not plundered with dynamite, bulldozers and cement.
We have lost the Lowell Mountain range in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom to big wind in what might well be the most destructive industrial project in Vermont’s history. And now the destruction is on our precious public land. By God, we had all better wake up, unite and see to it that this rage upon our mountains does not continue.
