Preservation Maryland recognizes efforts of Keep Kent Scenic

CHESTERTOWN – The Kent Conservation and Preservation Alliance, also known as Keep Kent Scenic, has gained a new partner in its efforts to protect the Chesterville area from development.

Preservation Maryland added Kent County to its 2016 lineup of “Six 2 Fix” projects. The news was announced Oct. 13 at the Maryland Zoo’s historic Mansion House in Baltimore, according to a news release.

The Kent alliance formed last year after a developer proposed building a utility-scale wind farm on agricultural land in the Chesterville area. The group continues to oppose the developer’s revised plans that would instead see a 370-acre solar built in the area.

“Kent County remains a truly picturesque rural, historic landscape, but recently, solar and wind farms have been proposed, which could drastically alter the look and feel of the region. Hundreds of acres could eventually be converted to this new use. While no one questions that clean energy is necessary for a more sustainable future, it should not come at the expense of the state’s history and heritage,” the Preservation Maryland website states.

According to the site, Preservation Maryland will work with its partners on the Eastern Shore, including the Kent alliance, to learn more about such threats as the solar development to the area’s historic landscape.

Preservation Maryland also will seek to find alternative solutions and work with additional partners such as 1,000 Friends of Maryland and the Maryland League of Conservation Voters “to identify common ground between the environmental and historic preservation community,” the release states.
