BAD AXE – A public hearing will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Huron County Expo Center for a proposed wind overlay district by NextEra Energy Resources.

County-zoned Sherman Township and Sigel Townships account for 15,480 acres and 2,560 acres of the district, respectively.

Sand Beach Township, which is self-zoned, accounts for part of the wind park, and so does Delaware Township in Sanilac County.

The public hearing applies to Sherman and Sigel townships.

NextEra has applied for the overlay zone as Huron Wind LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of NextEra.

The application asks to reclassify portions of Sherman and Sigel townships that are designated as agricultural districts as a wind energy facility overlay district.

The application states that 9,767 acres are under lease for the project.

Lease negotiations are taking place for 1,442 acres, and 411 acres are under lease with another wind developer, according to the application, which can be viewed at http://www.co.huron.mi.us.

The entire project calls for construction of 65 turbines, said Bryan Garner, manager of communications for NextEra.

The Expo Center is located at the Huron County Fair Grounds, 170 W. Soper Road.
