Important ruling from the European Court of Justice

On October 27, 2016, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) issued a ruling that the Walloon government (Wallonia, Belgium) acted unlawfully in creating a “norme sectorielle” aimed at considerably facilitating the deployment of wind farms in Wallonia without properly informing the general public and asking their opinion on the matter as required by the European directive 2001/48/CE. Articles 2(a) and 3(2)(a) of Directive 2001/42/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 June 2001 on the assessment of . . . Complete story »

Germany takes steps to roll back renewable energy revolution

Germany is taking steps to curb its booming windfarm sector in what it claims is a necessary move to stop the renewables revolution from undermining its own success. Critics, however, say the step will deal a blow to the country’s reputation as a leader in green energy. According to leaked plans from the German federal network agency, published on Tuesday in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the government has had to halve its original target for expanding its windfarms in the gale-beaten . . . Adding wind energy is not as easy as building wind turbines

Adding wind energy is not as “simple” as building wind farms. It also means constructing new transmission lines. Both Germany and China know this first hand. The Guardian newspaper has reported that the German government is paying wind producers to hold back when it comes to generating power – because its grid is unable to handle the additional capacity. And MIT’s Technology Review is reporting that China has the same problem. Referencing the BBC TV network, it says that because the . . . Complete story »

Wind project ruffles towns

GRAFTON— Political style yard-signs with the giant word “NO” over the image of a wind turbine pop up on roads leading into the southern Vermont town of Grafton, evidence that yet another community in the state is debating whether to become home to an industrial wind farm. But added to an already emotional debate in Grafton and neighboring Windham is the developer’s promise of direct payments to residents of the two towns if voters approve the project Nov. 8. Campaigners left exhausted by battle to stop development of Scout Moor wind farm

Rural communities were described as suffering from “battle fatigue”, as a public inquiry into plans to create England’s biggest wind farm on land near Ramsbottom ended. Planning inspector John Woolcock has heard evidence from Rossendale and Rochdale councils, Peel Energy and United Utilities – who want to add a further 16 turbines to the existing wind farm at Scout Moor, as well as representatives for surrounding communities which are opposed to the plans. The results of the inquiry are not . . . Complete story »

Stiles Brook payments worry secretary of state

WINDHAM >> Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos says he’s “greatly concerned” about a turbine developer’s monetary offer to voters during meetings held earlier this month in Windham and Grafton. Though the state attorney general’s office has said Iberdrola Renewables’ proposed “direct partnership payments” don’t violate election law, Condos asserts that the developer is “pushing the envelope in an attempt to influence the vote.” Voters in both towns are scheduled to weigh in on Iberdrola’s controversial Stiles Brook Wind Project . . . Meridian Energy disputes wind farm rates with Wellington City Council in High Court

Meridian Energy has taken its dispute over rates with Wellington City Council to court. A judicial review proceeding related to the council’s existing rating policy started in the High Court at Wellington on Monday and is set down for two days. Meridian applied to the High Court seeking a judicial review of rates due for West Wind in Makara and the nearby Mill Creek. The company is disputing how the land, near Wellington, on which the wind turbines are built, . . . Complete story »

Wind turbine plan for Addingham rejected by government planning inspector

Objectors to wind turbines proposed for a farm at Addingham are celebrating after they were rejected by a government planning inspector. The two 121ft (37m) high turbines planned for Chelker House Farm were refused planning permission by Bradford Council in August last year. The decision has now been upheld on appeal to the Planning Inspectorate because of the harm to the greenbelt and to the setting of historical assets at Bolton Abbey. Government inspector, Philip Major, agreed with Historic England . . . Complete story »

SNP councillors accused of “blatant cronyism” over turbine vote

An SNP councillor has been accused of “cronyism” after he lobbied his colleagues to support his wind turbine application. Councillor Sandy Duncan first lodged proposals to build a 150ft turbine at his Beechwood property at Forglen three years ago. The project attracted a flurry of public objections and was subsequently quashed by the Court of Session. But when it came back to the council for a second time it was narrowly approved by the Banff and Buchan committee, despite a . . . Complete story »

Brechfa West wind farm gets go-ahead to connect with national grid

Western Power Distribution has been given the go-ahead to connect Brechfa Forest West wind farm with the national grid – despite strong public opposition. Permission was granted by Westminster when Greg Clark, Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, gave it the go-ahead. This connection will allow electricity to flow from Brechfa Forest West Wind Farm to an existing electricity network near Llandyfaelog. Planning consent has already been granted for Brechfa Forest West Wind Farm. Developers, . . . Complete story »
