P.E.I. to sell rink wind turbines at auction; Turbines failed to meet energy-saving expectations

The P.E.I. government will sell four wind turbines and towers and parts of a fifth at an auction this weekend.

The turbines were previously installed at four Island rinks as part of a provincial government program.

They were supposed to help the rinks offset their energy costs, but never performed as expected.

The project received more than $1.3 million in funding from the provincial and federal governments and from the communities involved.

The communities were refunded their money last year by the province, which also covered the cost of taking down the turbines.

The auction gets underway Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
