NRG Energy wins auction for SunEdison for proposed Maine wind farm

Houston-based NRG Energy Inc. has won the auction for bankrupt renewable power plant developer SunEdison Inc.’s wind and solar projects in multiple states, including Maine, with a $144 million bid, according to a court filing.
The sale is one of several that SunEdison, once the fastest-growing U.S. renewable energy company, is holding since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April after an unsuccessful debt-backed acquisition drive.
Judge Stuart Bernstein in Manhattan will hold a hearing to approve the NRG bid on Thursday, a court filing by SunEdison showed last week.
The projects sold include SunEdison’s proposal for a 26-turbine project on Misery Ridge, near Moosehead Lake, that has generated local opposition from residents near the outdoor tourism destination.
NRG won the auction with its starting bid of $144 million, buying a total of about 2.1 gigawatts of SunEdison project capacity.
The Somerset wind project on Misery Ridge has not yet applied for a permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, but the company did set up several towers to collect wind data and evaluate the project’s potential at that site.
