Why would the federal government subsidize wind power on Bethlehem Authority property to the tune of $3 million per year?
1. Wind power is not cost-effective. The plan is to subsidize wind energy production by roughly 30 percent per kwh. If wind power was cheaper and reliable, power companies would be rushing to wind power for the competitive advantage.
2. Wind power takes a significant toll on birds of prey. For a state and country that persecutes killers of bald eagles when they raid ponds and hatcheries, it is the ultimate in hypocrisy that wind power, which kills birds by the thousands, is given a free pass. If you enjoy seeing eagles and ospreys gliding the Lehigh, Beltzville, Wild Creek and Bear Creek reservoirs up to Lake Harmony, vote against cronyism.
3. This boondoggle is benefiting a select few at the expense of the taxpayer. U.S. Senate candidate Katie McGinty used her political position to lobby for Iberdrola, and was paid roughly $100,000 per year by Iberdrola from 2009-14 and $25,000 for 2015 as a director on its board.
If you disagree with government dictating winners and losers, vote for a candidate, Sen. Pat Toomey, who stands up for the taxpayer by holding the line against government subsidies.
