Anger over Thurso traffic gridlock

Far orth motorists are in for a month of misery during roadworks at a main junction in Thurso.

Long tailbacks built up on Monday and Tuesday as a result of the installation of temporary traffic lights at the Toll and the narrowing of the road to accommodate a consignment of wind turbine components which are being hauled through the town.

Drivers have faced waits of 20 minutes while a hotelier and taxi firms have complained about losing trade as a result of the traffic disruption.

The trunk road contractor has also faced flak for failing to give advance warning of the work.

Sandra Campbell, who owns the Park Hotel, is fizzing about the gridlock which motorists have experienced through the roadworks.

Mrs Campbell said her business has been affected with fewer people coming to the hotel for food on Monday and yesterday.

She said: “It is ludicrous they are doing this in August which is one of the busiest months of the year.

“I would like to know who has given permission to do this at this time but no one seems to be taking responsibility.”

Sandy Budge, of Ormlie Taxis in Thurso, some bookings are being cancelled because of the delays caused by the lengthy tailbacks.

At one stage on Monday cars were queuing from the lights back to the police station in Olrig Street.

In the other direction, there were times when the queue of vehicles stretched all the way back to Thurso East.

The problems have been lessened by many staff at Dounreay being on holiday on Monday and Tuesday with their return to work today set to make for even longer logjams at rush hours.
