VA reaches settlement with failed wind turbine contractor

ST. CLOUD – A settlement has been reached between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the contractor of the failed wind turbine on the St. Cloud VA campus.

VA Public Affairs Officer Barry Venable says when the VA terminated the contract for default, the company appealed. He says both sides then agreed to a settlement which gave partial financial compensation back to the government and allowed the VA to keep the tower.

Venable says despite repeated efforts, the contractors were unable to get it working.

The VA now plans to conduct a study to assess future plans for the wind turbine site. It will include a wind resource assessment, and assessment of the structural integrity of the existing tower and foundation and make recommendation regarding turbine models best suited for the existing tower.

The study is expected to be completed in 2018.
