Apex to re-open comment period for proposed wind farm

Steve Neas is a member of Virginians for Responsible Energy. He said he’s opposed to the proposed Rocky Forge Wind Farm at it’s possible location in Botetourt County.

“I believe wind energy works where it should work and that’s in the Midwest where you have good industrial grade winds,” Neas said.

Apex said the wind farm will crate enough energy to power 20,000 homes.

Botetourt County leaders said they’re comfortable with the project and don’t think there will be any noise or wildlife concerns. Neas said he does not agree.

“If you’re standing right underneath the turbine, you’re not going to hear anything except for the rotors going,” Neas said. “The noise is projected from under the turbine as much as a mile or two.”

Next week, Apex will re-open its comment period for three reports containing new wildlife information.

The reports said that there were low levels of invasive plant species in the survey area along with no rare pirate bush plants and no big risk to birds.

Neas said the group is still formulating their official comment about the
new information.

The new comment period will begin on Aug. 4 and run through September 6. No public meetings will be held during the comment period.
