Lyme residents learn more about nearby wind projects

Wind farm projects in Jefferson County have met opposition from residents and lawmakers.

Earlier this month, the county Legislature voted to end county tax breaks for wind farms.

Despite that, two projects are moving forward. A representative for the Galloo Island Wind project spoke to the town board in Lyme Wednesday night.

“Lyme is not directly involved in the project, but there will be portions within the town of Lyme that would have a view of the turbines,” said Neil Habig, who’s project developer for Apex Clean Energy.

The plans would put 32 wind turbines on Galloo Island. The island is part of the town of Hounsfield and a few miles across Lake Ontario from Lyme’s Point Peninsula.

Lyme Town Supervisor Scott Aubertine says the town can’t prevent other communities from approving wind projects.”

“Not much we can do about what other towns do,” he said. “Nothing we can say, really. It’s their town.”

Representatives from Iberdrola Renewables also spoke to the town about their plans. Turbines from the Horse Creek Wind Farm would mainly be in Clayton, Orleans and Brownville, but would extend into a portion of northeast Lyme near Morris Tract Road.

The town only allows turbines on a small part of land outside of Iberdrola’s plan.

“We will be engaging the town board in this area to try and reach a reasonable objective set by standards for this area,” Iberdrola ‘s Jeff Reinkemeyer.

Representatives from Galloo Island Wind will meet with residents in the towns of Henderson and Hounsfield later this month.
