Hawick wind farm planning application lodged

A planning application has been submitted for a 13-turbine wind farm development south east of Hawick.

The Highlee Hill site near Chesters was originally being considered for up to 37 turbines.

Glasgow-based renewable energy firm RES said the project could meet the energy demands of more than 30,000 homes.

Development manager Ruth Elder said the scheme would also provide “significant benefits” to the local economy as a “major investment” in the area.

“We have selected a taller turbine at Highlee, which we believe is acceptable within the landscape and will optimise the amount of electricity that can be generated with fewer turbines,” she said.

“Onshore wind is the least expensive form of large scale low carbon electricity and by utilising wind energy at a site like Highlee Hill we are helping to make an important transition to a low cost, low carbon future for Scotland – great for consumers and our economy.”

A statutory consultation period will follow validation of the planning application which will allow public comment on the proposals.
