Collingwood mayor flies over turbine site

A birdseye view of the proposed wind farm in Stayner did little to change the mind of the Mayor of Collingwood.

Sandra Cooper and Simcoe County Warden Gerry Marshall took a flight on a plane from the Collingwood Airport on Friday afternoon to see what eight 500-foot high wind turbines would be like around the airport.

Cooper says you can see from the location that the turbines will pose a challenge to pilots.

She says the turbine also pose a threat to the viability of the Collingwood Airport.

Cooper says Hydro One uses the airport to fly their helicopters over areas to inspect hydro lines and infrastructure.

She says that could also pose a problem if there are turbines nearby.

Cooper says there are a lot of businesses who use and rely on the Collingwood Airport.

She says the wind turbines would have a devastating impact on economic development and safety.

Cooper says she is not against wind turbines but believes there are more suitable locations in Simcoe County than the one near the airport.

The project by WPD Canada was approved by the province but it is currently being appealed through the Environmental Review Tribunal.

A decision on the appeal is expected to come down in August.
