Kiata is set for 13 new wind turbines after Victoria’s planning minister approved the project on Thursday.

The new wind farm will be located three kilometres outside the Kiata township.

Mr Wynne’s office said the new project would create jobs, grow the clean energy industry and cut Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The project aims to provide enough clean energy to power more than 20,000 homes.

“This is a great project that will deliver a boost for renewable energy in north-west Victoria, and support more jobs in the clean energy sector,” Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said.

Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford said the project was a “win for north-west Victoria and a win for the environment”.

The premier’s office said the new wind farm would deliver big benefits to the regional economy and provide jobs.

“Local labour and services will be employed for construction where possible, and the farm is seeking expressions of interest from nearby suppliers,” a statement said.

About 14 per cent of Victoria’s electricity comes from renewable sources.

The state government aims increase that to 25 per cent by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2025.
