Tribunal against wind project

Residents against a major wind farm proposed for the south shore of Prince Edward County, have scored a major victory.

Monday morning, the Environmental Review Tribunal agreed, that the area was environmentally sensitive and 9-450 foot high turbines should not be constructed at Ostrander Point.

Cheryl Anderson is with the Prince Edward County Field Naturalists read the announcement to Quinte News today.

Lawyer for the Field Naturalists Eric Gillespie says this decision does three things.

The tribunal revoked the directors decision to issue the permit to Gilead Power, the company looking to construct the turbines.

Decisions with the White Pines and Amherst Island are still to come forward in the coming months, however Gillespie says this will help their case for both projects.

Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff says the Tribunal found that remedies proposed to protect the endangered turtles in the area would not be effective.

Quaiff congratulates the Field Naturalists and members of the public who have fought against the wind turbines for years.

The Tribunal decision overturns a provincial ministry’s support of the Gilead Power project to build the turbines at Ostrander Point.
