A windmilll caught fire while the evening’s Memorial Day traffic snaked its way through Interstate 10 on Friday.
Witnesses reported seeing the fire just east of the Whitewater exit off I-10 just before 7 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol’s website, a traffic hazard was reported in that area for multiple vehicles stopping to take pictures of the fire.
The fire was on “the motor of a high windmill,” and burning debris was falling to the ground, according to CalFire. As of 7:20 p.m., the windmill was almost completely burned on top and the fire was far less active. Firefighters will stay on scene for an unspecified amount of time to monitor and suppress what remains of the fire.
No one was hurt in the blaze.
