Congressman weighs in on proposed Clay Co. wind farm

As Sheppard officials voice concerns about a possible new wind farm in Clay County, Congressman Mac Thornberry is joining the discussion.

Base officials say wind farms create false returns on radar, where they can’t see aircraft and keep them separated.

They say that becomes critical within 25 miles of the base, and if a wind farm affects pilot training missions, it’s possible the Air Force could look at alternative bases for those missions.

Congressman Thornberry says this situation involves military bases nationwide.

Rep. Mac Thornberry/13-th District Congressman: “I have included a provision in this year’s defense bill that makes sure the department of defense has a voice earlier in the process when these issues come up because it’s not just at SAFB that there are these sorts of encroachment issues that are effecting our military.”

Congressman Thornberry went on to say the ENJJPT program is strong and secure at Sheppard, and more vital to the country’s national security than ever.

The possible wind farm development is still under FAA review.
