GMP: Lowell wind turbines to get radar-activated lighting

LOWELL, Vt. – Residents living within view of the wind turbines on Lowell Mountain are a step closer to having darker skies at night.

Since Lowell was first approved in 201, Green Mountain Power has tried to have a radar-activated lighting system on the 21 turbines. The system would be able to detect an airplane in the area and turn on the flashing red warning lights – as opposed to having them on all the time. GMP says that after years of delay the FAA has finally permitted a system to be installed.

“The FAA has now approved earlier this winter/late fall – a radar system that will do that. While it’s a little different than the original one – that one kind of stopped – they approved a different version, but it does the same exact thing,” said GMP’s Josh Castonguay.

The new radar-activated system is expected to be installed as early as next spring.
