The public has spoken….

It was a packed house for Thursday’s meeting of the Allen County Port Authority.

Members of the public wanted to let their voices be heard concerning a proposal by Apex Clean Energy to build a transmission line to an American Electric Power substation in Lima.

The line would link a proposed Long Prairie Wind Farm in Van Wert county to the Allen county substation.

Apex needed permission from the Port Authority because the line they want to construct runs along the Allen Van Wert rail line and they need an easement from the Port Authority for that to happen.

Ultimately the Port Authority voted down the proposal.

“We did hear the people and each one of us have been doing our due diligence to try and educate ourselves on the project. It wasn’t just about the money the port was going to receive. It was about how it was going to benefit the community, good or bad and the impact the project would have, “said Maria Sanko, Vice President of the Port Authority board.

“We’re surprised from the comments the folks made and we’ll just continue to move forward. The project has a lot of benefits that could bring to both Van Wert and Allen county and we’re excited to continue to move forward,” said Scott Hawken, Director of Project Development for Apex Clean Energy.

No word on how long this might set back the project.
