Big wind fails to change state law

Letter: Big wind fails to change state law | Argus Leader | April 24, 2016 | www.argusleader.com

I would like to thank all the South Dakota state legislators who could see through the shenanigans of the industrial wind industry in Pierre this year. Those who could not were Reps. G. Mark Mickelson, R-Dist. 13; Thomas Holmes, R-Dist. 14; John Wiik, R-Dist. 4; James Schaefer, R-Dist. 26B; Dean Schrempp, D-Dist. 28A; Mark Willadsen, R-Dist. 11; Kristin Conzet, R-Dist. 32; Patrick Kirschman, D-Dist. 15; Al Novstrup, R-Dist. 3; and Scott Craig, R-Dist. 33; and Sens. William Shorma, R-Dist. 16; Blake Curd, R-Dist. 12; Scott Feigen, R-Dist. 25; Jenna Haggar, R-Dist. 10; Betty Olson, R-Dist. 28; Scott Parsley, D-Dist. 8; Jason Frerichs, D-Dist. 1; Jeff Monroe, R-Dist. 24; Arthur Rusch, R-Dist. 17; Brock Greenfield, R-Dist. 2; Bernie Hunhoff, D-Dist. 18; and Jim Peterson, D-Dist. 4.

A wind farm in South Dakota constructed at least seven turbines that were placed too close to residence/property lines. Instead of finding a resolution that the offended parties could agree to, the solution of the wind industry was to try to change state law. They wrote or hog housed two separate bills, HB1106 and SB76, in an attempt to change state law so the offending turbines would be outside the setback distance. This would help prevent legal action towards them where they might have to remove the turbines or compensate property owners at great cost, for a mistake that they themselves made.

Once again, this shows the lack of respect, selfishness and disregard for the health, safety and welfare the wind industry and their lobbyists have for the citizens of S.D.
