Wind turbine project revealed

Details have emerged on the plan to erect 26 tall wind turbines in northeastern Potter County.

Developers have discussed the Big Level Wind electrical generation plant targeted for Hector Township with local government leaders and will soon submit official plans.

Big Level, a New Hampshire affiliate of German company Walden Green Energy, has struck a deal with a John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company forestland investment subsidiary to build the generating facility over a 7,000- acre forest section in the Dodge Hollow/White Knoll area off Pa. Rt. 49.

The turbines will be upwards of 600 feet high. Electricity will be fed into the grid through a First Energy line.

Hector Township Planning Commission, which has its own Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance, will review the project plan and eventually vote on it. Township officials confirmed that a public hearing will be scheduled.

Authorization for some elements of the plan is also required from the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection and the Potter County Conservation District.

Some individuals have expressed concern about the potential impact of this project on the Cherry Springs State Park Gold-Level International Dark Sky Park.

Big Level Wind has a price tag of about $150 million. Sparsely populated Hector Township will receive an annual host agreement fee and annual payments based on the amount of electricity that is generated.
