Wind farm saga continues to turn

CLINTON – There aren’t yet any wind farms in DeWitt County. Various wind farm companies have toyed with the possibility of the county as a site for the electricity-producing towers. So far, though, none have been planted on local soil, giving the county, if nothing else, time to assess the evolving political, legal and scientific landscape of the wind power industry.

The county board’s land use committee, on Monday, talked about the current status of wind farms in the county with zoning administrator Angie Sarver. She and land use chairman Sue Whitted attended hearings in Macon County covering a potential wind farm in the northern part of that county.

“Jeff Hammond, from TradeWind Energy, stopped by a couple of months ago,” Sarver said. “He said they have now two new prospective buyers for the power, which is why they’re going to start thinking about really continuing.”

TradeWind Energy, a Kansas-based company, has a history with DeWitt County going back to 2008, when the company proposed wind farms in areas near Wapella and Waynesville. At that time, company representatives estimated construction of the towers was a couple of years away.
