Local MPP unhappy with energy mismanagement

Sarnia-Lambton Conservative MPP Bob Bailey is expressing concern after the Ontario Liberal party opened bids for 600 megawatts of wind energy in the province.

Bailey says this comes after an Auditor General report claiming the province has spent $37-billion more than the market price for electricity over the past eight years.

He’s hopeful Sarnia-Lambton municipalities won’t be forced to take on the projects.

“We dodged the last one, I hope we dodge this one,” says Bailey.

“An example down in the St. Thomas area the one township that was a willing host were turned down and the township next door that was an unwilling host got them, so there’s no rhyme or reason as to how this government operates.”

Bailey says Ontario is shipping off extra power to places like Quebec and Michigan for discounted prices.

He notes seven of the wind companies that were awarded previous contracts donated to the Liberal party, totalling over $250,000.

The province is also opening bids for up to 50 megawatts of hydroelectricity, 250 megawatts of solar, and 30 megawatts of bioenergy.

Contracts will be awarded no later than May 1, 2018.
