Clarkson University professors, who are part of the Nanos Clarkson Research Collaboration, co-authored an impact study of the Galloo Island Wind Energy Project for the town of Henderson.

The report was authored by Professors Martin Heintzelman, Stephen Bird, and William Olson of Clarkson University and Nik Nanos and Daniel Kolundzic of Nanos Research.

In early 2015, the town of Henderson secured the Nanos Clarkson Research Collaboration to assist in determining the impacts from the proposed development of a wind energy facility on Galloo Island.

The report provides an overview of property value and economic impacts, as well as a viewshed analysis for the town of Henderson from the proposed wind energy facility development.

The proposed development motivated the town’s leadership to undertake a study of the development proposal’s impacts in order to support the local decision-making process.

Today’s public release of the report “Exploring the impact of the proposed Galloo Island energy project” by the Town of Henderson is the culmination of this process.

Residents of the town of Henderson have had questions about the impact of the Galloo Island wind facility on a range of issues ranging from the economic impact both in terms of jobs and tourism, impact on value of property values and the change in the view created by the proposed project. The independent research is intended to help understand what that impact might be.

“Since the proposed energy project for Galloo Island was announced, the residents of the Town of Henderson have had growing concerns surrounding what impacts such a development would have on our community. The report issued today assists us in clarifying some of those impacts”, said John Culkin, supervisor, town of Henderson.

“Our study has provided independent analysis which can inform decisions about this project moving forward,” said Martin Heintzelman, associate professor, Clarkson University. “Overall, our study suggests that there are likely to be some negative impacts on the Town of Henderson in terms of property values, negligible impacts on tourism, and the Town is unlikely to see much in the way of employment impacts from the project.”

“Nanos Research is pleased to be partnering with colleagues at Clarkson University in an effort to assist communities such as the Town of Henderson in addressing the questions of residents and key decision makers surrounding new energy development projects,” said Nik Nanos, President & CEO, Nanos Research.

The report’s findings were presented at a public forum at 7 p.m., Monday, April 4, in the Community Room next to the Henderson Free Library at 8939 State Rt. 178, Henderson, NY. The report will be available online at http://www.townofhendersonny.org/
