Study: Galloo Island wind project would hurt Henderson property values

A proposed Galloo Island wind project would likely hurt property values in the town of Henderson, but have little or no impact on tourism and employment.

Those are the findings of a study by the Nanos Clarkson Research Collaboration.

“Since the proposed energy project for Galloo Island was announced, the residents of the Town of Henderson have had growing concerns surrounding what impacts such a development would have on our community. The report issued today assists us in clarifying some of those impacts,” said Henderson Town Supervisor John Culkin in a news release.

The report is authored by Professors Martin Heintzelman, Stephen Bird, and William Olson of Clarkson University and Nik Nanos and Daniel Kolundzic of Nanos Research.

“Overall, our study suggests that there are likely to be some negative impacts on the Town of Henderson in terms of property values, negligible impacts on tourism, and the Town is unlikely to see much in the way of employment impacts from the project,” said Heintzelman in a news release.

The report’s findings will be presented at a public forum at 7 p.m. Monday in the community room next to the Henderson Free Library at 8939 State Route 178 in Henderson.

The developer, Apex Clean Energy, wants to put 31 wind turbines on Galloo Island.
