Wind measurements could lead to new wind farm

Lenexa-based Tradewind Energy, Inc. received a green light Monday to initiate wind measurements that could lead to construction of a wind farm in the northwest part of the county.

Six meteorological towers that will take measurements to determine the feasibility of Tradewind’s Diamond Vista Wind Project were approved by commissioners after consulting with company officials.

Tradewind senior development director Brice Barton discussed the need for the towers.

“Right now, we need to see if the resource is there,” Barton said. “We take risks everyday as developers, so we’re fine taking that risk to know that we’re putting up those towers.”

Towers will be placed in a 15-mile by 3-mile area north of 340th Rd. and west of Remington Rd.

If the wind is sufficient, Barton said the group would move to ask for creation of an overlay district to facilitate construction of a wind farm.

During public comments, Eileen Sieger told commissioners what she felt was a more proper name for the project.

“It was always a wind energy conversion system,” Segar said. “I know it’s common knowledge to say wind farm, but I live on a farm, and it’s no farm.”

In other business:

Sheriff Robert Craft and Judge Mike Powers approached commissioners with the request for a part-time security guard for the courtroom. No action was taken at the meeting.
