Selby wind farm refused

Plans to build a new 78 metre high wind turbine near Selby have been refused by Selby District Council.

The scheme to build the turbine at Oak Tree Farm in Selby Common, was submitted to the authority more than a year ago, causing more than 300 people to contact the council. While some supported the plans, many objected, and permission was refused last week.

Selby district councillor Judith Chilvers spoke against the turbine at the meeting, and said the turbines produce relatively small amounts of power, not enough to justify spoiling “one of the most attractive rural areas in Selby district”.

She also pointed out that other similar turbines in rural areas had been refused by Selby planners and that these decisions had been upheld at appeal.

Nigel Adams MP said: “Planning concerns raised by local residents have to be fully addressed. In this case local residents objected to the visual dominance of the proposed 78 metre turbine near to the local beauty spot of Bishopwood. This matter had not been addressed and the planning committee were right to unanimously refuse planning permission.”
Local resident Jennifer Kaye, who was strongly opposed to the development, said: “I am delighted that the turbine has been refused. We live in a beautiful part of Selby district on the main approach to Bishopwood.

“The whole area deserves to be protected from industrial development of this type. Whatever you do a 78 metre high wind turbine is bound to dominate the flat open landscape and be seen for miles.”
