‘Wind turbines will ruin environment’

Plans to build two wind turbines have been met by almost 100 objections.

Councillors have been recommended to refuse the two applications, which could generate electricity for homes across the district.

Developer Edward Russell-Smith wants to build a 85kw monopole wind turbine with a maximum height of 36.6m at Woodside Farm on Denby Dale Road, Bretton.

The council has received 39 letters of objections against the plans, including letters from Sitlington and West Bretton parish councils.

Objectors raised concerns about a lack of consultation with the public and that the turbine would dominate the landscape and significantly change its character.

One letter in support was submitted, which claimed the turbine was an appropriate size for the farm.

Urban Wind Limited has also submitted plans to build a 100kw turbine with a height of 22.6m at Whitley Farm on Green Lane, Netherton.

Agent Adele Ellis said that the development could produce approximately 247,000 kwh of energy per year.

The council received 59 letters of objection against the plans. The report said: “The turbine will ruin the environment and harm recreation. It will be an eyesore and deter residents from gaining any value from the countryside.”

Councillors will discuss both proposals at a planning and highways meeting on Thursday.
