Baird Malt turbine blocked after concern about impact on Arbroath Abbey

Operators of a £20 million Angus plant with 57 employees will now “consider its position” after being refused permission to build a wind turbine.

Bairds Malt said the turbine would have cut its £3.5m annual electricity consumption by a third and safeguard jobs.

The firm which has supply contracts with over 230 Angus farms will now hold an internal review and consider appealing the decision.

The proposed wind turbine was refused by Angus Council under delegated powers following 141 letters of objection to the proposal.

A handling report said the turbine would “result in unacceptable adverse landscape impacts having regard to landscape character and setting within the immediate and wider landscape”.

It also stated that the turbine would “result in unacceptable adverse landscape impacts having regard to landscape character and setting within the immediate and wider landscape”.

A previous report by landscape officer Stewart Roberts claimed the turbine would adversely affect the setting of Arbroath and historic landmarks such as its iconic abbey.
