Deering voters to decide on banning dogs from public beach

Hot topic: Deering voters will have to decide whether they want the town beach to remain dog-friendly. On town meeting day, voters will be faced with a warrant article that would enact an ordinance banning dogs from the Deering Lake Public Beach Area from Memorial Day to Labor Day and fining dog owners who violate the rule. “It will probably be a big one,” said Town Manager Russell McAllister.

Budget: The proposed operating budget is $2.01 million, up $101,642, or 5.3 percent, from last year’s budget of $1.9 million. The town did not have a projected tax rate available.

Noteworthy articles: The town’s zoning board has proposed a zoning amendment for large wind energy systems in town. While there are no large wind projects slated for the town, McAllister said this was a proactive move from the zoning board. The ordinance would require any proposed large wind project to be approved by the state Site Evaluation Committee and meet requirements consistent with the town’s Master Plan.

Contested races: None.

When and where: Ballot voting will take place between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. March 8 at the town hall. The town meeting will be held at 9 a.m. March 12 at the town hall.
