Clearview Township to appeal WPD Canada Fairview Wind project

Clearview Township will take another roll of the dice and challenge the province’s decision to approve a wind turbine project.

At a special council meeting on Feb. 24, township councillors unanimously supported a motion instructing lawyer Harold Elston to file an appeal of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s decision to approve the Renewable Energy Application for WPD Canada’s Fairview Wind Project.

The approval could see the construction of eight turbines in an area around County Road 91 and Fairgrounds Road, including two considered within the 2.1-nautical-mile outer surface of the Collingwood Regional Airport.

In making the decision to challenge the decision, the township will be throwing its lot in with the Town of Collingwood, which decided last week to also appeal.

An appeal must be heard by the Environmental Review Tribunal within six months.

Mayor Chris Vanderkruys told local media following the meeting the township had set a threshold of about $120,000, and had so far spent about $70,000 between legal expenses and the costs of an economic impact study of the turbines on the regional airport.
