Campaigners organise meeting in fight against wind turbines in Hartlepool

A public meeting to discuss three onshore wind turbines in Hartlepool will be held tomorrow night.

The meeting has been arranged by the Seaton Carew Wind Turbine Action Association which was formed to stop the erection of the three 574ft turbines – which would be the tallest in England if the scheme went ahead.

Plans by Hartlepool renewable energy company Seneca Global Energy to build turbines at Graythorp Industrial Estate, Tofts Road West and Brenda Road West Industrial Estate were approved by Hartlepool Borough Council a year ago.

But in October, it was revealed that the decision had been called in by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

It was after up 40 people had asked the department to intervene.

A public inquiry will now take place in Hartlepool in October and is expected to last up to eight days.

A spokesman for the turbine action group said: “About 90% of people I have spoken to are against them.

“The main objections are how close they are to residential properties and the size. At 175 metres they are twice the size of the those at Hart.

“I don’t think there has been enough research into the impacts they might have on the public.”

The public meeting will update people about the work of the association and gather people’s views to feed into the inquiry.

It takes place at Seaton Carew Cricket Club, Elizabeth Way, and starts at 6.30pm but places are limited to around 100.

Seneca Global Energy has previously said the scheme would deliver about a third of the town’s electricity requirements.
