Government inspector overturns turbine refusal

A council decision to refuse an application to build a 77m-to-tip wind turbine near Aberaeron has been overturned by the Welsh Government.

It was reported in the Cambrian News in November 2014 that an application for the construction of the 500KW turbine on land to the west of Penrhiw Fach, Henfynyw, was refused in line with the recommendations of officers and the unanimous advice of a site inspection panel.

But, following an appeal by the applicants, Mr and Mrs Williams, of Neuaddlwyd Uchaf, Ciliau Aeron, the Welsh Government has stepped in and granted permission for the turbine, subject to conditions.

A report by Welsh Government inspector, Hywel Wyn Jones, said: “The appeal is allowed and planning permission is granted for the erection of one wind turbine – 77m maximum height to blade tip and ancillary development to include crane hard-standing pad, sub-station building, grid connection works and site access.”

The original decision to refuse, greeted with applause from the public gallery at the time, was based on the effect of the proposed development on residential amenity in the area, the character and appearance of surrounding landscape, and its effect on the historic environment.
