Get ready for a wind farm in Jersey waters

Jersey Evening Post | February 1, 2016 | jerseyeveningpost.com

Jersey could soon be selling electricity generated from wind turbines in its waters to the French, the Environment Minister has said.

Deputy Steve Luce said that due to the progress France is making in developing wind farms in the seas around Normandy and Brittany, Islanders will ‘need to get used to’ seeing turbines off Jersey’s coast.

He added that it is likely that offshore turbines will be seen from Noirmont or Corbière within two or three years as the French press ahead to build a 62-turbine wind farm to the north of the Breton town of St Brieuc.

And it is possible, the minister said, that the development, which will be built close to the Island’s 12-mile limit to the southwest of the Minquiers, will be extended into Jersey waters providing the opportunity for the Island to sell electricity to the French and create jobs for Islanders in the process. There are also plans to develop a wind farm off the west coast of the Cherbourg peninsula.
