Bourne files lawsuit against Plymouth wind project

BOURNE – The town of Bourne has filed a lawsuit against a company constructing four wind turbines just across the town line in Plymouth.

Bourne Selectman Stephen Mealy says the lawsuit was filed on Friday in Superior Court against Future Generation Wind, which is owned by ConEdison, after the decision was made last week in executive session.

“The primary concern I think is the magnitude and the distance that these industrial turbines are being placed from residential homes in the town of Bourne,” Mealy said.

Mealy said the town is being challenged with how to effectively protect its residents from a project that is located in a neighboring town.

“It was permitted entirely within Plymouth,” Mealy said. “As such, Bourne has had limited opportunity to make any recommendations and changes to the plan now that it is in motion.”

Bourne residents have voiced concern about the location of the turbines and the anticipated impacts of noise and flicker at recent Board of Selectmen and Board of Health meetings.

Residents have sited possible health issues that some Falmouth residents were experiencing after the installation of wind turbines.

Mealy said the board of selectmen intends to provide information to residents as the process of the lawsuit continues.

“As with any particular case that might be before the town, for strategic reasons we need to limit the amount of discussion that we have had to executive sessions with the board of the selectmen and the board of health.”

Mealy said the area where the turbines are being built was formerly an agricultural area that housed cranberry bogs.
