Concerned landowners address Winnebago board on proposed wind farm

The Winnebago County Board of Supervisors heard from a large group of farmers and landowners who have been approached about the possibility of wind turbines on their property in the Lake Mills and Buffalo Center area. While the group was not totally opposed to the idea, they did have some concerns. Joe Larson, a concerned landowner and crop duster, addressed the board and those who were attending the meeting on some of the concerns about the windmills:

The board learned that there are some companies who will contract with farmers and landowners with the intention to construct and operate the wind turbines for up to 37 years on their land. In many cases, according to Larson, the farmer is virtually powerless after signing the lease.:

Another spokesperson for the group, Kevin Dearing addressed issues having to do with the noise and farm tile problems occurring from the construction of the windmills in farmland.

The group wanted the board to pass a measure called the Good Neighbor Policy. It is similar to a policy adopted by the Palo Alto Board of Supervisors over hog farms.

The board will consider the idea for a future resolution.
