200 attend meeting on turbines in Clonroche

More than 200 people attended a meeting in Clonroche on Thursday night on plans to develop a windfarm nearby.

A planning application for wind turbines on a hill near Clonroche has led to concern that further wind farm developments will be built in the New Ross district. The public information meeting was organised to highlight the facts about windfarms amid concerns that if erected, they will negatively affect the community in terms of house prices and health etc.

Kieran Hartely – who campaigned against the Eirgrid pylons – was in attendance. He spoke at length about the issue, while Teresa Buckley presented a slide show with facts and information about wind farms.

Ned Hogan chaired the meeting, at which disappointment was expressed that the windfarm developer Edward (Ned) Murphy, who is originally from the district, but is now living in Thomastown, was not in attendance to explain what he has planned.

His company Ballinclay Windfarms Ltd applied to Wexford County Council for permission to erect three wind turbines, an electricity sub station, ancillary buildings and incidental site works, to include site roads. The application states that the tower heights will not exceed 85 metres and the rotor diameters are not to exceed 82 metres.

A local resident said the area is divided over the plans.

‘We are trying to put a stop to it. According to the planning application there is a 10 km area south of Clonroche extending down towards New Ross which is zoned for wind farm development.’

Mr Murphy has committed to giving his viewpoint in next week’s edition of the New Ross Standard.
