Regional District to construct wind farm zoning category

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Following a report on to the Peace River Regional District’s board of directors last week, staff have been directed to look to other jurisdictions for ideal regulations.
The report, presented by the regional district’s General Manager of Development Services Bruce Simard. The PRRD does not have a zoning category that wind farms fit into, so one will have to be constructed.
“The board decided that it’s going to be discussed at committee of the whole … because it’s a fairly important issue,” said Don McPherson, Chair of the PRRD board of directors.
Three applications for wind farms are before the board, including one in Montney that has gotten a considerable amount of opposition.
“We’ve had a lot of residents relaying their concerns on how this is going to affect them visually, noise-wise, and with wildlife.”
McPherson, also the Mayor of the District of Tumbler Ridge, says he has personal insight on wind farms.
“There’s places for them, and there’s places where they shouldn’t be,” McPherson continues. “I agree with the board, we should be looking at be looking at each one on it’s own merit and see what the issues are with it, and how we can help, too.”
The regional district will look to other provinces, such as Ontario, for their legislation on wind farms.
