Wind turbines may become a feature in the city

Urban wind turbines may become a feature of the city after Galway City Council included support for “small scale” wind energy development in its six-year blueprint.

The draft Galway City Development Plan from 2017 states there is “potential for relatively small-scale wind energy development within the urban and industrial areas of the city”.

It adds the provision that they would only get the go-ahead where visual and residential amenities are safeguarded and there are no adverse environment impacts.

The Council would take into account the Wind Energy Development Guidelines for Planning Authorities (2006).

However adherence to these guidelines has not provided any source of solace to the hundreds of Galway residents in rural areas who oppose wind energy.

The biggest wind farm in the country is being built near Moycullen by electricity provider SSE Airtricity and the State forestry company Coillte.
