Avon and Somerset Constabulary turbine plan attracts scores of objections

Harming wildlife, destroying one of the most picturesque parts of North Somerset and causing noise pollution were three of the chief concerns raised in the 94 objections submitted so far.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary wants to install a 145ft wind turbine near its headquarters on the outskirts of Portishead.

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens believes a turbine is necessary to reinforce the force’s ‘commitment to a more environmentally-friendly way of operating day-to-day’.

Speaking in October, when the planning application was submitted, she said it would save the constabulary money and help protect frontline policing levels.

However, since then the plans have won little favour with the public.

The consultation period for people to register their views for and against the plans expired towards the end of December, however comments can still be submitted ahead of North Somerset making a decision. The council has not set a timeframe with which to make a decision.

However, Bristol Airport has told the council it does not believe a wind turbine will have serious repercussions on its day-to-day activities.

In 2013 the airport raised concerns about the police’s turbine plans because it could affect its radar but a change in proposed location by the police has satisfied worries of airport bosses.
