Unorganized townships in Moosehead region petition proposed wind turbine projects

Two proposed wind turbine projects for the Moosehead Lake area have residents in some unorganized townships concerned.

Using a law passed during the last legislative session, residents from thirteen unorganized townships and one organized plantation submitted petitions Monday to the Land Use Planning Commission, asking to be removed from Maine’s expedited wind zone.

“That means any wind developers that have their sights set on our beautiful mountains don’t have to go through any rezoning processes at all. It’s basically an open invitation for them to come and develop wind in the Moosehead Lake region,” said Amy Lane, Rockwood resident. “We hand these petitions from Rockwood and several of the other unorganized territories and we submit them to the Land Use Planning Commission and then they submit them through a review process and hopefully they will air on our side and remove us from this expedited wind area.”

SunEdison and EverPower have proposed two industrial wind projects for the region that would create 50 turbines.

There is a 45 day window to challenge the petitions.

We reached out to SunEdison and EverPower and did not hear back.
