Bid to build 25-turbine wind farm abandoned due to ‘lack of wind’

Plans to build a 25-turbine wind farm in the Highlands have been abandoned because of a lack of wind.

ABO Wind said its tests found unexpectedly poor winds at the proposed site of the Allt Carach wind farm near Beauly.

The developer said the decision is not connected to the UK Government’s decision not to give subsidies to new onshore wind farms from April 2016.

Local campaigners described the news as “fantastic”.

An ABO Wind spokesman said: “We began investigating the site in 2012 and have followed normal procedures to establish whether it would be a good location for an onshore wind energy development.

“We are very disappointed as Allt Carach would have been a very significant project for ABO Wind in the Highlands.

“However, we remain committed to developing sustainable wind energy projects across Scotland.”

The development could have supplied up to 75 megawatts of electricity directly to the upgraded Bealy-Denny power line.

But anti-wind farm campaigner Lyndsey Ward said the plans had “hung over the local community like a dark cloud”.

She added: “This will be the best Christmas and New Year this community has had since ABO darkened our lives Scotland’s communities have been unfairly plagued by multinational wind developers who have cared nothing for them or saving the planet.

“They have ruthlessly targeted wild land and been aided and abetted by the SNP government.”
