Solar, wind power useless then, now

Alameda letters: Solar, wind power were useless then, still are now | Alameda Journal | Posted: 12/02/2015 | www.mercurynews.com

Giving money to solar power producers is a bad idea. We’re already subsidizing this inefficient power source through federal and state taxes with tax breaks for construction. Ratepayers also pay more for power to keep them in the money. Now they want a guaranteed payment for what they produce. That is too much.

Solar collectors stop generating electricity when the sun goes down at night or goes behind a cloud. Real power plants have to be kept running so they’ll be ready to produce when we get nothing from renewables. Owners of solar collectors want us to sign a contract to pay them when they have surplus power, but they won’t sign a contract guaranteeing us electricity when we need it. Meanwhile we have to pay to keep the plants running, sunshine or not. This does not compute.

The backlash against solar and wind has begun. Let’s keep it going. Solar and wind were useless in the 1970s; they still are today. Tell the California Public Utilities Commission: “No more subsidies for inefficient power sources.”
