MoD objection halts Monikie turbine plan

A Monikie wind turbine has been refused planning permission following an objection from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Green Power Consultants applied to Angus Council for a 77-metre turbine on farmland in West Bankhead.

The development was described by the MoD as likely to cause “unacceptable interference” to radar at Leuchars.

Officers also refused the development due to the possibility it would contribute to turbine “clutter” on the landscape.

Case officer Ruari Kelly reported: “The proposed turbine added to the existing turbines at Tealing Airfield, North Tarbrax, Lochlair and Greenhillock and the approved turbines at Frawney, Govals and Stotfaulds would create a cluttered view of the landscape for road users where the turbines would appear at different sizes, designs and spacing, resulting in adverse cumulative visual effects.”

MoD assistant safeguarding officer Claire Duddy told officers the turbine would be 10 miles from the ATC radar at RAF Leuchars.

Mr Kelly added: “While research is ongoing to identify possible solutions that may be applied to the radar and to mitigate effects of wind turbines in the future, the MoD is currently unable to agree to the application.

“As a result of this, I must conclude that the proposal fails (policy) which requires that no wind turbines will interfere with authorised aircraft activity.”
