Some in Kure Beach want wind energy areas farther off shore

Town council in Kure Beach plans to discuss a resolution next week to oppose wind energy areas in the line of sight of beach goers.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced plans in September to issue wind energy leases off the coast of North Carolina as close as ten nautical miles, but some beach communities are looking to extend that. According to the proposed resolution in Kure Beach, the bureau has extended the leasing restrictions for other parts of North Carolina.

A motion to oppose this failed by a 3-2 vote at council’s last meeting. Supporters had patterned the resolution after one discussed by council on Bald Head Island that recommended restricting licenses 24 nautical miles away from shore, but those who opposed it said they wanted more time to draft their own resolution.
