Some people do not know that the constructing of a wind turbine costs between $2-3 million and that the National Treasury pays 66-75 percent of the cost. President John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Having a wind turbine on your farm is not helping your country, it is doing your part in helping increase the national debt.
Green energy is wonderful, but only if it is self-supporting not being underwritten by the U.S. Treasury. Today, electricity generated by coal, oil and gas is subsidized by slightly over 2 cents per Hundred-Kilowatt-Hour, but electricity generated by wind turbines is subsidized by 56 cents per Hundred-Kilowatt-Hour. All such subsidies should be abolished. If wind turbines could be self-supporting, therefore receiving no U.S. Treasury money, it would change the picture a lot.
It should be realized that all wind turbines do not abuse people or animals, but there are a lot of documented cases that have caused serious consequences. People have been traumatized with endless headaches, vertigo, being unable to sleep, stigmatized by hours of flickering in their windows, annoyed by the seemingly unending sound of the turbines, and many more annoying and health problems.
Again, all turbines do not cause these problems, only those located in the wrong place. The wrong place, simply stated, is TOO CLOSE. In my opinion, 2000 ft. is definitely borderline at being too close–therefore, anything less that that should be out of the question.
Everyone that lives too close to a wind turbine is not necessarily going to be affected, but there is no test to determine whom it might be. It is similar to people going out in a boat. There is no test to determine whom will get seasick.
If turbines are located too close, no one can move them. Therefore, let’s put them in the right place in the first place.

Editor’s note: The Boone County Board will vote on the Kenney/Cleverdon Text Amendment to the Boone County Wind Energy Conversion Systems Ordinance this Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m., at 1212 Logan Ave. in Belvidere. The Rock River Times urges Boone County residents and all local environmentalists to contact members of Boone County Board to ask them to vote for the Kenney/Cleverdon Text Amendment. On Oct. 27, the Boone County ZBA voted 5 to 0 in favor of recommending it to the County Board; and on Nov. 4, the Planning Zoning and Building Committee voted 4 to 1 in favor of recommending it to the County Board. Please support this amendment which protects the property rights, health, safety and welfare of Boone County residents. The following guest column is by Don Ellingson, a Boone county citizen in his 90s and a Manchester Township resident, where many of the wind turbines (along with LeRoy Township) will be sited.
