Henderson residents raise concerns about Galloo Island wind project

A new proposal is on the table to put a wind farm on Galloo Island in the town of Hounsfield.

Residents in the town of Henderson, where the shoreline looks out onto Galloo Island, are concerned about how the towering windmills would affect their town.

“They take away peace and quiet and relaxation and beauty,” seasonal resident Rose Cirillo said. “It takes away the beauty.”

“Even though it’s not part of the town of Henderson, we are the closest to it than anybody else,” Henderson Town Supervisor John Culkin said, “so if there are any negative impacts to come from this project, we’ll feel it first and most.”

One of the concerns is that putting the 575-foot windmills on the island would decrease property values along the shore.

“Now we have to worry about our property being devalued instead of increasing,” Cirillo said.

Hudson North Country Wind – the company proposing the project – says the wind farm is far enough away that it would barely be visible.

The company held an informational meeting Wednesday night to clear up concerns about the project. They say the project is just in the first stages and it should take two to three years to move out of the review process.

“As people learn more about the project there will be more opportunities for a more formal Q and A,” Hudson North Country’s Bill Moore said, “so that everybody can stand up and ask their questions, and this is a good way to start.”

There will be another meeting Thursday in the town of Hounsfield.
