Crews are working on the Shannon Wind Farm in Clay County, and officials say it will help power a massive Facebook center that will be built in Fort Worth soon.

But, one group called “Clay County Against Wind Farms” met on Tuesday night to talk about what it says are ‘negative impacts of such wind farms.’

The group hopes to stop other wind farms from being built in Clay County, despite what some county officials say are big economic benefits.

Clay County Judge Kenneth Liggett has said that over a 10-year time span, the wind farm could bring $8 million to the county.

Jimmy Horn’s company is partnering with a company out of Canada to build the Shannon Wind Farm, and he says this new form of energy will be economically beneficial in more ways than one.

Dr. Paul Burns is a landowner in Brown County and came to speak at the forum.

He says he has seen how wind farms effect communities first hand, and while the wind farms may benefit landowners temporarily, much of the money is made by the power companies and the power produced isn’t enough to make it worth it.

Burns also pointed out that when some wind turbines wear out, they aren’t replaced or taken down, leaving a big eye sore that devalues the property they stand on and properties for miles around.

They say the purpose of this forum tonight, was just to spread the word, and encourage landowners to not let the promise of many persuade them into allowing wind farms to be constructed on their land.
